What
a magnificent animal! The
polar bear, also known by its Latin name
Ursus
maritimus which means sea bear reflects the fact that it spends much of
its life around water. Their diet consists largely of ringed and
bearded seals and an occasional walrus.
They
are well-adapted to severe cold. A thick layer of blubber provides them
with insulation so that their body temperature and metabolic rate remain
the same even at very cold temperatures. Their
front paws are large and are used like paddles for swimming while the
hind legs trail behind. The nose, and the skin underneath the white fur,
are black. The soles of the feet have small papillae and vacuoles like
suction cups to make them less likely to slip on the ice.
The polar bear is the largest land carnivore alive in the world
today. Adult males can weigh up to 1,760
pounds. The females are about half the size of the male s and normally
weigh around 500 pounds. Amazingly at birth, the cubs weigh between 1
pound 3 ounces to 1 pound 6 ounces.
